I shall be setting my watch
and all the clocks to space time,
the fourth dimension and time dilation,
so I will be able to stretch it out into infinity and beyond:
lightyears of exploration,
sitting in my tin can with Poe, Wells and Major Tom.
They say the future is just around the corner:
I can see its shadow creeping up,
taking a bend in the continuum,
slowing down and speeding up
with my breath and heartbeat
from an overdose of cosmic dust
that, in the not too distant future,
could cause my tin can to rust.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads: Out of Standard – Future/Tense
Iadora is hosting Out of Standard and has set us a challenge to defy the conventions of a particular theme and find new places in the everyday with the prompt ‘future/tense’. We can interpret and write to this theme in any way we choose.
As a physicist I adore your approach… in the space time continuum, the past is far away, so maybe the future if time passes through our mind, expanding, the future is a pebble that we all keep inside… the center of the universe is after all, just relative…. constantly expanding.

Many years ago I worked for the European Space Agency in Cologne and am still interested in space and time. My knowledge of physics is underdeveloped but I was employed purely for my linguistic prowess at the time. The Emma Press has published a lovely anthology of poetry about space for children which you might enjoy, Bjorn.

I am a total sucker for all things space — and the space-time continuum is fascinating. Love that you’ve taken some of the past greats on your journey (Poe, Wells..). Thanks for sharing!

Kim I really admire the world blending here and the tension of time stretching/wretching itself on the narrator. How else do you get Wells and Poe to behave and Major Tom to even make an appearance. Well done and viva la.

Without the bend in the continuum we would need a bigger craft for those thrre! Thanks for reading, Isadora!

I also think this is cool, Kim. the author Samuel Peralta used to participate in dVerse – you might like his work, too, in case you haven’t read it yet. ~
