Beyond the Solar System,
in the Cygnus constellation,
a hot Jupiter orbits,
enormous, gaseous planet
of intense light and heat
locked face to face
with its parent star in space.
Colossal clouds of corundum,
a ruby and sapphire conundrum
of unimaginable tone,
are blasted by fickle, violent winds,
hot as hell and cool as diamonds.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Open Link Night
I am fascinated by space and was inspired by an article I read on Sciencealert today.
This is wonderful… the space is fascinating, and I can just imagine a giant planet like that… (it must be big to be visible from here). Like a giant swan.

The more planets they discover the more fascinating it becomes. The universe just keeps on expanding…

Cygnus x-1 comes to mind. Great topic. Is there life out there?

Well there seems to be plenty of hot air and gas…

I always enjoy the mix of science and art in poetry and this lives up to that so well. Not as informed about planet/space as I would like to be. This tempts me to learn more.

Joyful Christmas to you, too, Kim. I will check out science alert. My undergrad degree is in science so that field of knowledge still tickles my right brained self.

I think a ruby and sapphire conundrum would be quite out of this world!!!

According to scientists, it’s out there! We just can’t see it from here 😦

Maybe they should call the planet Oz!

“Hot as hell and cool as diamonds”. Love this line — could apply to so many things besides space — relationships, a sneer….
Wonderful galactic post! 😊

This is so interesting. I like that you shared your fascination with us all. Otherwise I would never have stumbled upon “corundum”.

Merry Christmas, Gayle, and I’ll see you back at the Poets Pub when the festivities are over! Look out for a man dressed in a coat the colour of corundum (that’s where the word ‘cor – al’ comes from)!
