M4 Westbound

A slow roll forward.
Then a grinding halt.
Afternoon is coming to an end
and we are still hemmed in by metal.

A slow roll forward.
Then a grinding halt.
Not a sign of an accident
and no breakdown on the hard shoulder.

A slow roll forward.
Then a grinding halt.
No emergency vehicles or flashing lights –
just streams of cars joining the motorway.

A slow roll forward.
Then a grinding halt.
A long Friday takes its time
coming to an end.

On Day 8 of The Poetry School’s NaPoWriMo prompts, we were writing poems that use repetition: the same words, or wording, repeatedly, to drive home a point.

The example poems given by The Poetry School were Gwendolyn Brooks’ iconic poem ‘We Real Cool’ and Tony Hoagland’s ‘I Have News For You’.
