Written in Sunshine

Early this morning, as I was catching up with comments and prompts, I received an unexpected message: ‘Happy Anniversary with WordPress.com! You registered on WordPress.com 2 years ago. Thanks for flying with us. Keep up the good blogging.’ This gave me some cheer on a Monday morning. Although I retired from teaching three years ago, I didn’t start blogging until a year later, having spent the first year brushing up my writing skills with various courses in order to complete my first novel. I didn’t know that blogging would unleash all the poetry I had been carrying around in my head for years. The first haiku I posted was like an orphan sent out into the world. I have changed the first line to include a season word:

written in sunshine
no echo, no reflection
waiting in silence

It received two likes, two comments, and I was delighted! I was also astounded at the different types of blogs, the number of challenges and prompts, and the quality of writing. It didn’t take long for the poet in me to grasp this new tool with both hands and make a mark in the cyber library (that’s for you Björn!). Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I got into the habit of writing as soon as I woke up, warming up with a haiku or two or more, and moving on to longer poems, short stories and the next novel. That first year I was tempted by NaPoWriMo but wasn’t quite ready for it. Then I discovered the dVerse Poets Pub and the rest is history.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Haibun Monday – Free for All!

Today Toni is our host and has give us licence to choose our subject but the haibun must be in classic form with 1 – 3 tight paragraphs and a seasonal haiku, using the classic form.

Toni has used a selection from Basho’s Road to the Deep North as inspiration. It includes two haiku – one to break up the middle and one at the end, with season words used in both haiku.

  1. Happy anniversary. I had my sixth year anniversary with WP last week. I love your haibun and the two haiku – thank you for following the example and posting two! The first haiku is astounding and the second is perfection. Thank you for finding dVerse!

  12. This is oh so perfect Kim —– I especially love the final haiku — it relates so well to the story you share here about your coming to the poetry world! 🙂 And so very happy to have you here in dVerse.
    I started writing poetry after I retired…taking an online course that “unleashed” the words. I started a blog after researching how to even do that — and was happy when I got to 10 followers! 🙂 Bjorn somehow connected with me….and I ended up loving this community! So — here’s to many more years as diverse colleagues! 🙂
