Angels and Stars

Stone angels form
a guard of honour
outside a mausoleum door
visible from the open gate
where the mourners
assemble and wait.
Whether it’s a simple
grave or tomb,
when hair, nails
and flesh are gone
all that’s left
is stardust and bone.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Bits of Inspiration: Día de los Muertos

Susie reminds us that November 1st, The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. It focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

Susie would like us to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the garden by drawing inspiration from our favourite dead poets and writing new poems to honour them. They can be about the poets, their poetic style, a line from a poem or a quote.

I’ve loved the poetry of Dylan Thomas since I was at school and the poem that has inspired me, ‘And Death Shall Have No Dominion’, fits the theme, particularly the lines:

“When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,

They shall have stars at elbow and foot”.
