Escape to Make-Believe

facts are cold
with hard edges
they keep me awake at night
I crave the misty blur
of make-believe and fiction
when imagination
slips between the covers
I am in another world
place or time
and even though
they were written by another
the facts are all mine

My response to Poets United Midweek Motif: Reading Fiction

Susan asks what happens when we read fiction: does it seem more a physical, intellectual, emotional or spiritual engagement? Or don’t we read it?  She tells us that some say fiction distracts us from a true path, but others believe with Ralph Waldo Emerson that “Fiction reveals truths that reality obscures.”  Our challenge is to write a new poem with ‘reading fiction’ as topic and/or motif.

  1. I love slipping into a well written book! And all kinds of worlds open up, especially if one reads across the genres … it’s always an adventure, and you never quite know that you might discover.

Great ending to this poem – I think it speaks a profound truth –
an amazing story, well written, may have been penned by another, but the “facts” do become one’s own!
