At Dawn

yoake ni arau tsuyude watashino ashisaichoubi

at dawn
I wash my feet with dew
the longest day

Yozakura

at dawn
the first pink flush of morning
still bleary with sleep

I wash my feet with dew
cold and refreshing
the fragrance of grass

the longest day
stretching to the horizon
suffused with promise

at dawn
woken by a blackbird’s song
the day begins

the first pink flush of morning
filters through the blinds
a cloud of dust motes

still bleary with sleep
the heaviness of blankets
a cosy embrace

I wash my feet with dew
crystal clear droplets
mirroring the sky

cold and refreshing
imbued with stars and moonlight
overspill of dreams

the fragrance of grass
blades bending under bare feet
a tickle of green

the longest day
a leisurely cat purring
on a warm doorstep

stretching to the horizon
light in all its form
sparkles on water

suffused with promise
invitation from nature
rise and seize the day!

My response to Carpe Diem Weekend Meditation #113 Troiku Hineri: at dawn, also linked to Poets and Storytellers United Writers’ Pantry #4: Let Poetry and Prose Be Our Break from Catastrophe

This weekend our challenge is to create a Troiku Hineri: with a given haiku we create troiku and then, from the troiku, we write a further nine haiku – three new haiku from each haiku created from the given haiku. The given haiku is one of the first haiku by Yozakura, the Unknown Haiku Poet.

  1. Kim, I feel that with this form it was hard to write a poem with meaning. You did fine, Good Job!! My favored spots included “fragrance of grass
blades bending under bare feet” which was a familiar to many. Better still with me was the “leisurely cat”, I liked both your word constructive use, clever, and the image of it laying where it could find early morning sun.
I had trouble signing on to WordPress with Mrs. Jim’s computer, it didn’t trust me. I think this, my Galaxy Smartphone, will sail through.

  2. Kim, this is a gentle and healing massage for the soul. I feel lines “overspill of dreams” and “a tickle of grass” caressing my thoughts, and reminding me how beautiful the morning (and the world) can be. Thank you so much for this one.

  3. This is incredibly penned, Kim! 💝 I love the smooth and elegant progression of your Troiku Hineri especially; “the fragrance of grass blades bending under bare feet a tickle of green.” 😀
