Grandmother’s Trinket Box

The tiny ballerina danced
to a melody from Swan Lake
played on tiny bells
when you opened the lid –
she posed before a mirror
en pointe, like I once did.
A heap of trinkets sparkled,
a treasure trove to me,
glittering golden brooches,
dangling earrings with rubies
and an emerald buckle bangle:
my Sunday morning treat.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Just One Word: Trinket

Marian is our host this weekend and has shared a photograph of a beautiful trinket quilt made by Cosmos Cami! I have a friend who is a prize-winning Irish quiltmaker; she made various items for my daughter when she was a baby and later when she had a room of her own, which we cherished for many years. She taught me to quilt but all I managed was a bag!

The word ‘trinket’ is magical and conjures all sorts of things, not just items but also synonyms that have their own special sounds, such as bric-a-brac, bibelot, curio, gewgaw; and bijou. But for me, trinket tinkles and chimes.

    1. The ballet dancing ended in disaster when I was a young teenager – weak ankles brought my hopes of a career in the Royal ballet to an end!

Trinkets certainly come with a sentimental value that one can sit hours just admiring them. That ballerina twisting and turning had fascinated many through the ages. Good choice, Kim!

    1. All I have now is one of my grandmother’s brooches – I don’t know what became of the music box or the ballerina. I imagine yours is wrapped up safely in tissue paper.

  2. I adore this, Kim. I can hear the tinny song as I read it. I don’t think I had a box like this, but I recall one from a friend when I was a teen. Really good!
I wrote a poem years ago about my dresser drawer full of trinkets that maybe I can reprise for this prompt 🙂
