Why Fly?

Why is the fly so bothersome,
zooming from a corner of the room
to land upon the kitchen worktop,
buzzing – will it ever stop?
Why does a fly have no etiquette,
using my sandwich as a toilet,
spreading diseases everywhere?
Why, fly, don’t you care
that most humans think you’re a dirty pest,
they squash you flat and make a mess,
while I gently lift you up
from the sticky rim of my coffee cup
and, opening the window wide,
set you free to fly outside?

My response to NaPoWriMo Day Twenty-Eight

I can’t believe we there are only two days left after this prompt that asks us to write poems that pose a series of questions, which could be a mix of the serious (“What is the meaning of life?”) and humorous (“What’s the deal with cats knocking things off tables?”), the interruptive (“Could you repeat that?”) and the conversational (“Are those peanuts? Can I have some?”). We can choose to answer them or just let the questions keep building up, creating a poem that asks the reader to come up with their own answer(s).

  1. Why do flies … fly, feed, fornicate and leave feces on food? Because they do. Thank you it is a nice post! I too rescue things, me with a trusty butterfly net gently put out ladybirds, spiders and the like. Why? Because I do.😉

  2. I’ve tried to set them free, but they HEVER cooperate & take the exit, apparently preferring to stick around, gross me out & annoy me. Now I’m a confirmed swatter.
But I’m a swatter who greatly admires your poetry…
